Art in New Orleans (Local Artists)

My other update for today involves the different art experiences that I was able to have throughout the city. This afternoon the members of my group and myself took a walk down Royal Street to view the different art pieces that were there. As soon as we entered the street we were greeted by a group of jazz musicians playing in the middle of the road. This was really interesting to watch and listen to as many people started to gather to view and listen to the musicians as well. I went to three different galleries throughout my time spent on Royal Street, but my favorite gallery was called Galerie Rue Toulouse. As I walked into the gallery I was able to view many paintings of different scenes that are viewed throughout New Orleans such as streetcars and Jackson Square to name a few. My favorite painting of all was called “Canal Streetcar.” This picture measure 24*40 inches and had many vibrant colors when I looked at it (you can view the picture below).  I was able to talk to the owner of the gallery to ask him some information about this paining in particular. The owner explained to me that the painting could range anywhere from $10,000-$15,000 dollars once it is sold. I was amazed at this price when he told me that! He also explained to meet that the streetcars of New Orleans started in 1835. He explained to me that this painting was to be looked upon as both “romantic and practical.”

I am drawn to this painting particularly because of my personal love for the streetcars of New Orleans. I feel that the streetcars are excellent ways to view the city while witnessing the history around the area. One of my favorite things about this painting was that the inside of the street car was painted, so that it looks as if it is completely lite up at night time. While in New Orleans, I love to see the street cars lit up and night and to watch the people that are riding them as well. The painting seems to tell the story of New Orleans during the evening, and how even though the city may be dark the streetcar continues to be lit up. I think this street car is a great representation of New Orleans as a whole. Even though there are dark times in New Orleans when things go wrong, such as Hurricane Katrina, the people of New Orleans always find a way to come together and pull the city back to how it originally was.

Until next time,

Hannah
