The adventures continue! (History, Architecture, Religion, and Cuisine)

Today was day 3 and it we started quite early this morning! My alarm went off at 5:45 this morning, and it was difficult to get ready but I managed to do so. I started my day off with breakfast at the hotel (which was very good) and then took a walk to catch a street car. Once we caught the street car and got off and started to walk it started pouring rain (thank you mom for telling me to take an umbrella). The city taught me today to always be prepared for any kind of weather! Once we got to our destination we were able to go on a tour. We saw all different grave sites including the famous voo doo queen of New Orleans as well as the future grave of Nicolas Cage. The man on our tour also explained to us that every year all the different families in New Orleans come out and take care of the graves of their late family members. I thought this was really unique and it surprised me to learn how important family and history is in the New Orleans culture as well.

After the grave yard tour we were able to take a tour of the Congo Square and many other French sites as well. Congo square was espeically interesting to me because this square is completely open for jazz musicians to perform and for others to gather and to dance as well. Following our tours we were able to grab a bite to eat for lunch and do some shopping. Instead of lunch, my group decided to enjoy life and eat dessert first! We went to Cafe du Monde and had a glass of water with a delightful French pastry called a beniget. The food was amazing to say the least! Our afternoon was spent on a cuisine tour around New Orleans. My top three favorite foods I tried were brisket in a cajun sauce, gellato, and a canole as well! This part of the trip was especially neat because our tour guide was excellent in explaining the history behind all the food that we had as well.

As our day came to a close we were also able to listen to jazz music. At the end of the day, one thing I realized I learned about myself was how much I love traveling! I really have enjoyed the culture and experience here in New Orleans so far. As we were sitting at dinner tonight, a local from New Orleans sat down and talked to us. This part was the highlight of my day because it was very interesting to hear his opinion on the different shops, people, and food of New Orleans. It also made me realize how much Southern charm the people have down here as well. My perception of the city changed, as at first I thought the people of New Orleans would not be so friendly. Now I have realized how neat the people here really are, and how they truly live life everyday like it is their last. I can't wait to see what more is in store for tomorrow!

Benigets!

Until next time,

Hannah
